1990-94 Alumni Reunion Friday 8 & Saturday 9 July 2011
The Alumni Relations team was delighted to welcome back over 180 alumni and guests from the graduating classes of 1990-94 for the LSE Alumni Reunion on 8-9 July 2011.
On Friday 8 July, LSE Pro-Director (Research and External Relations), Professor Stuart Corbridge, took to the stage in the Old Theatre to welcome alumni, give the State of School address and to update alumni on the latest developments. Prof Corbridge was later joined on stage by Reunion Class Chairs Fiona MacDonald (BSc Social Policy & Administration 1991) and Shami Chakrabarti (LLB 1991) to announce the reunion class gift, an impressive total of £101,149.26.
After the speeches, alumni headed to the Senior Dinning Room for the Welcome Reception where drinks and canapés were served. Alumni were able to reconnect with old friends, remise on their time at the School and find out what everyone had been up to since graduating.
Following the reception many alumni continued the night in The Underground for The Social, guests were able to relax in a familiar surrounding, dance to the tunes of their times. Guests were welcomed by their host, Martin Lewis (BSc Government & Law 1994) before comedian, Gary Delaney (BSc Economics 1994) performed his stand up act. The night came to a brief standstill due to a unexpected fire alarm where alumni were forced to pile onto Houghton Street amongst hundreds of summer school students! However sprits were still high once alumni returned indoors and the evening continued into the early hours.
The reunion continued on Saturday morning as alumni took tours around two of London’s best landmarks, the Houses of Parliament and the Tate Modern.
On campus the reunion moved to the New Academic Building, where alumni arrived for registration before the first session of the day. Professor Michael Cox (MSc Social Policy & Administration 1996, Co-director of LSE IDEAS, Professor of International Relations) gave a colourful presentation on LSE’s newest and innovative undergraduate course, LSE100: Understanding the causes of things. Professor Cox was very engaging and answered questions during an interactive Q&A.
Professor Cox’s session was followed by LSE Estates: past, present and future which was presented by Julian Robinson, Director of Estates. Julian gave a fun and interactive presentation on forthcoming campus developments, and in particular developments with the New Students' Centre. Current LSESU General Secretary, Alexandra Peters-Day (BSc Anthropology 2011) then led a talk on the Student Unions and its representatives, activities and campaigns.
After a light lunch alumni joined current staff members on tours of the School, where they were shown around the library and its ‘trading floor’, the new Student Service Centre, the Atrium gallery and the breath-taking views from the 8th floor of the New Academic Building.
The final session of the day was a lecture by Professor Simon Hix (MSc (Econ) Politics & Government of Western Europe 1992), Michiel Van Hulten (MSc Public Policy & Administration 1992), Dr Abigail Innes (BSc (Econ) Government 1991, PhD Government 1997) and chaired by Professor Michael Cox on 'What’s wrong with British Politics?' with the key speakers giving varied insights on topics ranging from the professionalisation of politics to Britain's ambiguous relationship with the European Union.
The finale of the reunion was the Gala Dinner in the stunning Edwardian Palm Court and Adelphi Suite of the Waldorf Hilton. Alumni enjoyed a pre-drinks before settling down amongst old friends for a delicious three course meal. After dinner, former LSE Professor and guest speaker, Professor David Starkey delivered his speech on his insights into the world of the Social Sciences and his memories of the LSE.
Fiona MacDonald and Shami then returned to the stage to award both Robert Pe (LLB 1990) and Adrian Franco (LLM 1992 ) with LSE goodie bags for travelling the farthest to the reunion (they travelled from Hong Kong and Mexico respectively). Fiona and Shami closed the formal part of the evening with their memories of the School and their friendship, after which many alumni took to the dance floor and danced the night away.
We hope you all had a hugely enjoyable reunion and we would like to thank all of those who volunteered their time to make your return to the School a memorable one. We look forward to seeing you again for your next reunion!
