Thanksgiving Service at Westminster Abbey for Lord Dahrendorf

November 2009 News

A Thanksgiving Service for Lord Dahrendorf of Clare Market, KBE, FBA, was held at noon on Tuesday 3 November 2009 at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey.

Lord Dahrendorf was director at LSE from 1974-1984 having completed a PhD under Professor T. H. Marshall in 1956. Transcending the lines of a prominent life in Britain and in his native country Germany, Lord Dahrendorf was an active member of the House of Lords.

The Service was attended by a large number of those paying their respects to Lord Dahrendorfs' life including Sir Howard Davies and Lord Giddens who read an extract from LSE:A History of the London School of Economics and Political Science, 1895-1995, written by Lord Dahredorf.

The German Friends of LSE have honoured the memory of Lord Ralf Dahrendorf, director of LSE from 1974 to 1984, with the donation of a bronze bust sculpted by renowned German artist Bertrand Freiesleben.

The official unveiling of the bust took place in the Old Building Atrium on Friday 24 September 2009, at a special event with guest of honour Georg Boomgaarden, German Ambassador to the UK.

Lord Dahrendorf is also honoured by the Lord Dahrendorf Scholarships, generously supported by Deutsche Bank, which support students from developing countries to study on Master’s programmes within the Department of Finance.
