After the introduction in 2008 of new steps to ensure a high standard of teaching at LSE, which followed a review of teaching at the School and satisfaction levels amongst students, many of the 40 recommendations suggested by the Teaching Task Force have been put in to action across the School, with more being introduced for this academic year.
The task force's recommendations cover three main areas; improving the quality of teaching and academic support for students, supporting teachers and students and recognising and rewarding good teaching. An additional £2 million has been invested in to teaching facilities. Through the recognition of the importance of contact between students and permanent staff, much of the funds have gone to recruiting new lecturers to reduce class sizes and there has been a refocus of office hours to ensure that teachers give further concentration to academic feedback and advice to students. Thanks to a £30,000 allocation from the Annual Fund, the Teaching Innovation Awards have also been introduced to encourage and reward innovative teaching across LSE. The initiatives around the Teaching Task Force will encourage innovative teaching, improve teacher student contact and provide a high level of teaching to rival LSE’s reputation for its high quality of research. The board is due to report back after three years and we look forward to reading the outcomes. More information and related articles: LSE website 3 November 2009 |
